US military chiefs says Venezuelan arms buildup destabilising

Chavez is negotiating with Russia to buy five diesel electric submarines that he says Venezuela needs to protect its extensive offshore oil drilling facilities. He also went shopping in Belarus in June for an air defense system. And in 2006, Venezuela signed contracts with Russia to buy 53 Mi-24 armored helicopter gunships, Sukhoi 30 fighter planes and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles. The Venezuelans also have talked about building a factory to manufacture the AK-47 assault rifles in Venezuela, a development that US and Colombian officials fear could flood the region with arms. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has taken a dim view of Chavez's intentions, accusing him of supporting Colombia's main rebel group, the FARC, and rejecting his call for it to be removed from the US list of terrorist organizations.

Shifting population splits Ontario

Richard Patten, who is retiring after 15 years as an Ottawa MPP, is the outgoing parliamentary assistant to the Premier. But despite Dalton McGuinty's own Ottawa roots, the Premier has failed to stem an apparent bias.

"After a while, for those outside of Toronto there's resentment," Mr. Patten said. Mr. Patten, 65, is not seeking re-election. His riding of Ottawa Centre is one of about 15 key battleground ridings."

Poor Dalton, on a first day of his re-election campaign he gets a stab in a back and this is just a harbinger of many more such things to come. Dalton's fake smile and his attempts to show stiff upper lip cannot hide his desperation and his fears.

In his short stint as the worst premier Ontario ever had Dalton desperatelly tried to gain acceptance of every crook, every thief and every sexual deviant that ever crossed his path and in the end he got rejected by every single one of them.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.
